Israel pounded central Beirut with a deadly air strike on Thursday while its ground troops in Lebanon were accused of firing on the UN's peacekeeping headquarters, injuring two of them. The air raid on Beirut, where an AFP journalist heard several loud explosions, was the third such attack on the centre of the Lebanese capital since Israel escalated its campaign last month. "The Israeli enemy's attacks on the capital Beirut this evening resulted in an updated toll of 22 people killed and 117 others injured," Lebanon's health ministry said in a statement. Former US ambassador to the UN John Bolton today told NDTV that the United Nations is a huge organisation and that many bodies of the global body are irrelevant. Two chain snatchers allegedly attacked a 30-year-old woman CISF constable who was out for a morning walk near the Akshardham Metro station in the national capital on Wednesday, an official said. Constable Supriya Nayak suffered injuries during the physical altercation with the bike-borne assailants but she managed to grab one of them, who was later handed over to the local police, a senior Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) officer said. The incident took place around 7:45 am when Supriya Nayak was walking near her residence in the Pandav Nagar area of east Delhi, he said. The assailants attacked the woman from behind and as they tried to snatch her chain, she demonstrated "exceptional composure under pressure" and apprehended one of them, while the other escaped, the officer said. France has submitted the final price offer to India for the 26 Rafale Marine Jet deal just ahead of the scheduled visit of Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval to the country. Leading Israeli television networks reported that Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah was the target of a massive Israeli air strike in a Beirut suburb on Friday. "Target of the strike: Nasrallah. The IDF (Israeli military) is checking whether the secretary-general of Hezbollah was in the building in the heart of Dahiyeh (that was hit)," Channel 12 reported. India on Tuesday said companies will have to seek fresh approvals to import laptops and tablets starting from January 1 and guidelines to do so will be issued shortly. India launched an "import management system" in November 2023, which required companies to register with the government the quantity and value of their laptop and tablet imports. The government said at the time the data would be used for monitoring imports. The system, due to expire this month, has been extended until year-end. "Importers would be required to apply for fresh authorisations for the period from 01.01.2025 subject to detailed guidance to be provided shortly," said a government notification issued on Tuesday. India announced the new system for laptops, tablets, personal computers and servers after it rolled back an earlier plan to impose a licensing regime, requiring the likes of Apple, Dell and HP to obtain licences for shipments of imported laptops and tablets. The Andhra Pradesh Cabinet headed by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday approved the new excise policy and 33 percent reservation for Backward Classes (BCs) in legislative bodies, among others. Addressing a press conference at the secretariat, I & PR Minister K Parthasarathy noted that the new excise policy will come into effect from October 1. "The cabinet decided to adopt a private retail system for sale of liquor as part of an attempt to increase management efficiency. Of the 3,736 retail outlets in the state, 10 per cent will be allotted to the toddy-tappers community," said K Parthasarathy. Meta will port all designated Instagram accounts automatically to "Teen Accounts", which will be private accounts by default, the company said on Tuesday. Users of such accounts can only be messaged and tagged by accounts they follow or are already connected to, while sensitive content settings will be dialed to the most restrictive available. Users under 16 can change the default settings only with a parent's permission. A water storage facility breach at miner Vedanta Aluminium's unit in Odisha has impacted agricultural land, the company said on Monday. The incident, which happened at Vedanta's Lanjigarh alumina refinery in Odisha on Sunday, has alarmed environment experts who pointed out it was a serious matter as the toxic byproduct 'red mud' was involved. The pumped water level, or PWL, has causticity in water, meaning it can corrode organic tissue by damaging skin, eyes and mucus membranes. The water overflowed due to heavy rain, Vedanta Aluminium said. Visuals of the industrial incident show process water lake downstream of a pond that appeared to have been formed by 'red mud'. A large volume of muddy red water was also seen flowing into open areas. The water covered the ground where some trees stood, and ran over other forms of vegetation. 'Red mud' is the waste generated in production of alumina from bauxite. It is also known as 'bauxite residue'....
